What Does Legal Consultation Offer an Individual?
A legal consultation helps you understand your position before you sign, respond, or file a case. It is not limited to a quick answer, but connects your facts to the applicable legal provision and clarifies your rights, your obligations, and the available options. Matters commonly raised include:
- An employment contract, termination of service, or end-of-service entitlements
- A lease contract, a real estate purchase, or a dispute with a contractor
- A personal debt, a check, or a promissory note
- Family and inheritance matters
- A decision or action issued by a government entity
How to Prepare for a Legal Consultation Request
The more precise the preparation, the clearer the opinion and the less need for clarification. Before the appointment, it is advisable to prepare the following:
- A written summary of the facts, with their dates, on a single page
- Basic documents such as the contract, correspondence, decisions, and receipts
- The specific question you want answered
- Any upcoming date, such as a hearing, a response deadline, or a due date
What does the legal advisor provide you at the end of the consultation?
A legal advisor explains the legal position as it appears from the documents, the available options and the risks of each, the missing documents, and the recommended next step, whether negotiation, a warning notice, amicable settlement, or litigation. For matters with significant financial impact, a written opinion can be agreed upon. The scope of the consultation and its fees are set by a clear agreement before starting.
Remote consultation and verifying the lawyer
Consultations are provided in person in Riyadh and Jazan, and remotely for the rest of the Kingdom's regions, with documents exchanged electronically. Before any consultation, you have the right to verify the lawyer's license through official channels, and you can find the method in the article How to Verify a Lawyer's License. If the consultation results in filing a case, many of its procedures are handled through e-litigation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a legal consultation and appointing a lawyer of record in a case?
A consultation is an opinion on a specific matter that clarifies your position and options, and it concludes once that opinion is delivered. A retainer, by contrast, means the lawyer carries out the procedure on your behalf, such as drafting the statement of claim and attending hearings, under a power of attorney and a fee agreement. Many cases begin with a consultation, after which the client decides, once they understand their position, whether they need a retainer or not.
Is Legal Consultation Confidential?
A lawyer is bound to keep their clients' secrets and whatever they learn by reason of their profession confidential; this is both a legal and a professional obligation. Even so, it is advisable to send only the documents needed for the matter and to use the agreed communication channel. Information from the consultation is not disclosed to another party except with your permission or in cases required by law.
Is a General Question Enough Instead of a Full Consultation?
A general question may be enough to understand the legal framework, but it does not substitute for reviewing the documents when a decision has a financial or legal impact. A small detail in the contract or the date of a piece of correspondence can completely change the answer. The opinion given in a consultation is therefore built on the facts and documents submitted, and it notes what might change if new facts emerge.
